Letter from LC Alumni Association: Internships

Recently, Paul McCurdy ’82 published the following letter stressing the importance of internships as part of the Lafayette Experience. This is a follow up to the talk he gave during President Weiss’ visit several weeks ago.

February 16, 2009

Dear Friends:

I know that you recently received a letter from the Alumni Office signed by our Chapters’ Chairman, Bill Tucker ’81, about the importance of summer internships for our students. I want to underscore the importance of internships by making two points.

First, the attached The Wall Street Journal article from January 28, 2009 makes it clear that internships are an important part of the college experience. The process of securing an internship is becoming more
competitive, and participants are getting more “creative” as they market, sell, and auction off internship opportunities. I think you will find the article worthwhile reading to give you a perspective on how this game is changing and how important it is that we participate.

Second, I received a note last week from a senior and experienced AAR about a highly qualified student he interviewed last weekend. The student cited the robust internship and externships offered by Lafayette as one of his major reasons for choosing the College. He went on to explain that he
had compared other schools’ internship programs and concluded that ours is stronger, better and more “real” –not just a marketing gimmick posted on a college website.

I commend you for your efforts in support of the College and hope you will continue to advance our objectives. I would be happy to speak with any of you if you have any questions or comments and hope to see you in the near future.

Best regards,

Paul F. McCurdy ’82
President
Lafayette College Alumni Association
